So, I am sure I am not alone - most workplaces have potlucks this time of year.  It's always a source of anxiety: if you go to pick up your plate, and there is still food left - argh.

Fortunately, the big event with lots of appetites happens first, and I do my tried and true Greek Salad.  Usually all that is left is the diluted dressing in the bottom of the bowl, as was the case this year.  *Whew*.

The next one is for a smaller group of much more finicky people.  Argh.

Imo the reason people host potlucks is they want lots of leftovers so that they can eat them for the next several days. If your plate has leftovers on, that means you've been generous.

My experience is that is means that other people think your food offering is weird.

That's how I read it anyway! Didn't occur to me that you'd comment on *my* cooking when we've never met in RL.

I remember the University department I used to work for did something like that, it was called 'Food For Thought' and everyone would bring something along. I only went to one of them. The food was quite nice but not worth the time spent listening to the professors giving boring speeches!

Snork! I work in academia too and yes, I know some boring Profs as well as some great ones.

The best potluck I went to in a University context was one for which everybody made a dish from per home country. It was quite a good bridge-builder.
