Down to 3 wildfires

We are down to three wildfires in BC:

But we lost one of the routes to Vancouver today:

That'll be all we need. A saturated, unstable slope under a fire which brings down a flaming landslide onto the last road connecting BC to the East.
But it's a perfect metaphor for the past 2 years...

I'm still in the habit of thinking of the Coq as the "new" highway, and forget that '86 is 35 years ago. Roger's Pass opened in the 60's and the Hope Princeton in '49. Not even a hundred years of experience with gravity-assisted water. Metaphor central.

Cool, wildfires and massive flooding, everything is fine here. We can dilly-dally about climate change and keep building pipelines, no biggy.

You know we aren't going to do anything, right? Those who have the power believe they can escape whatever happens; those who currently can't escape what is already happening have no power. I'm mostly resigned, but I am sorry we are taking the tigers with us.[1]

I know. I really don't think the ones with power are going to be able to escape to the degree they think. Like what are they going to do without workers?

This makes me think of the floating cities that were proposed a couple of years ago. I've sneered about this before, but I can't find it. This is an overview of the concept:

The idea being that it is a super-gated community where people in it are "safe".
My sneer is: who do they think it going to clean it or repair it or take out the garbage or supply the stores or ... blah de blah?

One the one hand: seriously, could people *be* any more greedy?

And on the other hand: so, how will the owners get to their hidey-holes when the world goes blooey?

And, finally, I doubt that "the end of the world" will be a stop. The plague that led to the crippling of feudalism didn't actually stop the world. It changed it, it bent it out of shape, and it made the going a hard slog, but nobody who survived knew that they wouldn't "go back to normal".

Oh yes, floating cities figure somewhat prominently in my novel, for similar reasons. I just don't think it ever goes well for anyone. Look at cruise ships. What these rich fucks don't realize is that we live in a society.
