Christmas meme, from moustachios

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?

Champagne.  Be serious.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?

As a child, unwrapped because only one child.  As an adult, wrapped.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?

Coloured.  My favourites were the bubble lights, which are long since dead.  I saw a reproduction set a while ago, but they weren't the same - not as jewel-toned, and the bubble water looked thin and wimpy.

4. Do you hang mistletoe?

No.

5. When do you put your decorations up?

Never more than a week before Christmas, and then down on the day after New Year's day.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?

Brussel Sprouts.

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child:

I've always been a late sleeper and had to be woken up even for Christmas morning (there are pictures of me as a very little tot looked completely befuzzled and whatthehellisthis).  At age eleven, I finally woke up early enough to go be the first one under the Christmas tree - and my grandparents were sleeping in the livingroom on the hidabed.  Went back to bed and had to be woken up.  :)

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?

Age six.  I got up to go out and give my parents heck for making so much noise when there were people who'd been MADE to go to bed against their will trying to sleep, hem hem.  The kafuffle was the setting up of the Santa Claus present.  I don't recall actually being surprised, though.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?

Our family has gone through all kinds of permutations.  As a child, never - then the big Christmas Eve activitiy was selecting just the right cookies for Santa Claus's plate, and washing the carrots for the raindeer.  As an adult, we've tried opening one, all, just the socks on Christmas Eve, and we finally decided that we don't like having to stay up late (can't happen until midnight), and then there's nothing to do on Christmas day.  We save all the presents for Christmas day, and, as much fun as they were, we don't do socks any more (waaay too expensive).

10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree?

Get it out of the box.  Find all the pieces of the tripod.  Discourage the cat.  Attach the pentacle to the top of the tree.  Put all the lights on.  Discourage the cat.  Put multicoloured glass-style balls on.  Discourage the cat, and maybe give him his own new shiny squeaky thing.  Put assorted angels on (one made from macaroni on pasta tubes, a little fat naked goddess with wings, a wooden one, and etc).  Discourage the cat.  Put on assorted garlands, such as a red beaded one with stars and moons, a silver beaded one, etc.  Discourage the cat.  Continue to discourage the cat and replace assorted glass-style balls when found.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?

Pretty on hills and pine tree branches, rotten on roads.

12. Can you ice skate?

Of course, just not lately.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift?

Last Christmas my SOGP got me a portable DVD player.  I'm still all squeaky about that.

14. What is the most important thing about the Holidays for you?

Family.  They make me crazy, but they are mine.

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?

My Mom's iced gingerbread cookes - the best.  My Grampa's mincemeat turnovers - the best.  Nobody makes them like Grampa used to do, but my Mom's are pretty close.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?

As a child - hanging up the sock on Christmas Eve.  We never had a fireplace, and we moved a lot, so there was always a long involved discussion about where would be the best place to put it so Santa could find it when he came in.  I always got to use my Grampa's work sock because they were the biggest.  Some things are very difficult to get out of a long wooly work sock.

17. What tops your tree?

A star.  The family tree has an angel.

18. Which do you prefer: giving or receiving?

Giving when I've guessed right.

19. What is your favorite Christmas Song?

Hark the herald angels shout, two more days 'til we get out; two more days of misery, in this penitentury; no more school and no more books, no more teachers' dirty looks; hark the herald angels shout, two more days 'til we get out.

20. Candy Canes! Yuck or Yum?

Yuck.  Chocolate cherries - yum.

21. What do you want for Christmas?

In the not-happening category - a laptop.  In the more-likely category - a counter-top dish washer.  In the for-sure category - a copy of Ratatoillle (however it is spelt).

22. Do you attend an annual Christmas Party?

We're hit and miss depending on whose work has a party.

23. Do you dress up on Christmas or wear PJs?

Nightclothes for presents, and then shower and get dressed for Christmas brunch.

24. Do you own a santa hat?

Er ... yes.  It also fits my big head.

25. Who do you normally spend Christmas with?

My parents.  I'm an only child and so, if we spend it with Lorne's mom, they stay with us and come too.  If we spend it with them, we go to them.

There's always more memories, y'know?  Like the one where we went toboganning in the pitiful skimpy Okanagan snow, and I fell off into a cactus patch.  Owie.  :)

We're not having the usual big tree this year (and didn't last year either) because Ella is so mad for climbing. Sasha wasn't that interested in the Christmas tree other than sitting underneath and looking pretty in the lights, but Sheba, the cat we had when I was a teenager, loved to go up it like a shot, actually knocking the thing over at one point.

We'll have a small 'lemon cupressors' from the garden with the lights on instead, up on the bookshelves - Ella'll probably hardly notice that!
