Diana Fox Carney & hockey
Jun. 8th, 2026 12:08 pmI am watching (taped) the installation of Louise Arbour as the 31st Governor General of Canada. As always when Mrs. Carney accompanies her husband to events or occasions, whenever I catch sight of Diana Fox Carney in her current role of self-effacing helpmeet of her husband, I am conflicted. On one hand I want someone to take her in hand and spiff up her wardrobe just a bit, and on the other hand I feel ashamed because she is a woman who has her own career and accomplishments, and it is obvious that her lowkey style has served her well. Nonetheless, I want her to be a lean serene fashion dean. Not flashy, but maybe just a little intimidating.
I mean, she is so lowkey that I didn't even remember her name and had to look her up through her attachment to her husband. She is always present, but the press spend no time on her, positive or negative.
What has prompted me to write this is that Diana and Mark met through hockey.
(!!!!!)
Why are we not going bonkers about how our "elbows up" prime minister met his coolly accomplished wife through their love of hockey? They each played for their Hockey Clubs (men's, women's) at Oxford. I mean, c'mon. If this was the previous prime minister's vivacious little wife, there would have been no end of metaphors about DFC fiercely protecting her goalie husband MC. We would wax lyrical about how "Goaltender protection in hockey is a crucial aspect of the game, emphasizing the safety and well-being of the goalie, who serves as the last line of defense." [1] [2]
In her own career, Diana Fox Carney has been/is working in climate science and agricultural science. I suppose Mark Carney is popular enough in his current incarnation of Not The Last Guy that he and his PR team do not need the extra luster her accomplishments could provide. So I guess he and his PR team are holding DFC's credentials in reserve until they need something to prop up sagging enthusiasm as MC's PMship ages.
But, c'mon: hockey. We should be all over this. :)

[2] - oh, c'mon. With Frumpkin as the bruiser on the opposing team, this stuff practically writes itself.
