Today, after a week of threats, we finally have snow on the ground. Well, here in the dark heart of the lower east side, not actually on the ground, which is still storing thermal energy in all that concrete and asphalt[1], but definitely on thin chilled surfaces like blackberry bush leaves and cars. It has been desultatory most of the day, starting and stopping. The first time I looked out (8:45 am), there was a skiff on things, but it wasn't snowing. Then at 9:30am it was falling in big fat quarter-sized flakes, but that only lasted about five minutes. Now if it falling in the little tiny steady serious-business flakes. These will amount to something. These will soon be sticking on the ground.
It is blowing and gusty, and minus one celcius at two fifteen pee em, so I am so glad I am not out in it, nor needing to go out in it.
This will be pretty after dark, when the snowflakes will appear to be swirling around the street lights, but right now it just looks cold and treacherous. Ah....there go the ambulance sirens. Drat.
UPDATE - three pee em - it is sticking; the ground is white.
[1] - I want to spell this "ash-phalt" because my family pronounces it "ash-fault". It *looks* like it is made from ashes, so hey.
