You'll recall that we were gifted with a new washer and dryer for Christmas.  They are all shiny and fabulous, and it is so terrific to have them in the apartment.

But, the reason I am blogging with gratitude about them is that if you forget a kleenex (facial tissue for the brand-phobic) in a pocket, you do not get millions and millions of little wet kleenex shreds.  No, indeedy.  You get a single amorphous hard lump of previously tissuey cellulose.  Easy to find and easy to dispose of.  That is a fine, fine thing.

Appliance Woes

We were promised a "pleasant chime" by the manufacturer's literature when we chose new front-loading washer and dryer about eight years ago.

BLAAAAAAAAATTTTTT!!!!

No. It's a gawdawful buzz, and on the dryer, it doesn't turn off until you come and remove the heavy wrench which is hanging from the control post - the only way to make said dryer actually turn on any more.

Even so, after 25 years-plus in apartments without facilities, I love doing laundry.

Our oven has been broken for months. I keep dithering about replacing with gas versus electric. We want gas, but gosh, the expense of the pipes...but then the tornado last week knocked out electricity for three days, reminding us of yet another reason to get gas... blah blah blah, dither dither dither. The stovetop still works, and we're grilling a lot.

I've always liked gas appliances, and I still do even though gas is not cheaper than electricity like it used to be. The amount of heat under the pot is easier to control; the burner shuts off immediately so that the pot can be left there until you are ready for it; gas is usually still available even during an electrical outage.

My folks live in a rural area where they suffer a high number of power failures because of car accidents on the highway. They have a gas stove and a gas oven and a gas fireplace, so they always have heat and warm food regardless of the outdoor weather. They say the only thing they miss during power failures is light to read by. I got my dad a spelunker's head lamp, and he now uses that. :)

We don't have gas appliances because you never find gas appliances in rental accommodation in the big city. But I like'em.
