Dear SEPHORA - please stop.
Dec. 3rd, 2022 08:54 pmOne of my biggest disappointments about the lies of capitalism is targetted advertizing. It sounds so good: nefarious beings scrutinize your every click and twitch, possibly even tracking your eye movements, so to understand your likes and dislikes. Thereby to lovingly craft the curated basket of retail therapy morsels specifically, delightfully For You.
Ahahahahahaha - cue me rolling around on the floor (metaphorically because we don't do that no more).
Instead what we get is the same old retailers with their same old same old, flogging their crap.
Which: fine, okay, even though I pay for internet service, I don't really, you know, *pay* for the content created by creators, so I am willing to watch a number of advertisments (which baffle me as to who would want the things) in exchange for the nonfree free things I want to look at, play with, etc.
I play a solitary game which has occasional ads. Up until this week they've been varied, and while not interesting to me, not actually awful. Then SEPHORA came along. It's for makeup (hohum[1]), and it is in the form of nauseating little vignettes of people giving other people things and all smiling phonily to be polite. Ugh. Fine, okay. I hate the artform, but hey - free game, right?
SEPHORA has doubled down and is now every ad in every ad slot in my game - as well as leaking into other places. TOO MUCH. Okay, I could maybe handle nothing but SEPHORA if it wasn't done with such maudlin twaddle - but this? ARGH.
So. SEPHORA? Stop. Just stop. I definitely know your name now, but not in any way that will help your bottom line. Ugh.
[1] - remember my lip blisters? That stuff gets into lipstick and chapstick and then just spreads the joy around the mouth. I never put any goo on my lips. And, if you aren't going to finish with lipstick, then you can't do the rest because it looks so pointless and unfinished without lipstick.
